You might like to know that I'm sipping a cup o' freshly brewed PG Tips loose tea as I'm writing this post on P.G. Wodehouse's novel.
This is my new favorite series, I'm quite sure, even though I've read only this book so far. It's as nerdibly quotable as The Princess Bride.
Here are a few gems.

  • Bertie Wooster adds "ish" to the ends of words ("lateish" appears often). I thought we invented this in the nineties and Psych recently brought it back. But Woodhouse apparently was ahead of his time. He also adds "the" before characters' names and constantly abbreviates words and names. Mr Filmer the Cabinet Minister becomes "the Right Hon. A.B. Filmer" and then "the Right Hon."; Thomas becomes "Thos"; the dreadful vegetarian Laura Pyke, "the Pyke";  and circumstances, "circs."

  • In a dialogue between the narrator Bertie and his friend/nemesis Tuppy:
'Will that make her open her eyes? What?'
'What?'
'I said "What?"'
'So did I.'
'I meant, "Won't it?"'
'Oh, rather.'

I have to run this novel back to the ol' library because it's lateish; I'll type up a full review on another day. I have a rather hefty late fee I have to pay before I can pick up another in the series. The Wodehouse is sure to keep me entertained all through this dreary wintry weather.
